How to Use a Firestick Remote Control (Fire TV Stick)

When it won't work: the app needs the Stick already on Wi-Fi. A brand-new Stick still needs the plastic remote once to join the network. A VPN on the phone can also block the local pair. Turn the VPN off, then try again.

Method 3: Control the Fire Stick with your TV remote

Lost the Firestick remote control and do not want an app? The TV remote can drive the Stick through HDMI-CEC. The path is free. The keys are limited.

Turn CEC on, then use the TV remote's arrows and OK:

• Hisense and most brands: Settings > System > HDMI-CEC (or CEC Control).
