Point the top edge of your remote at the TV from about six feet away. Press Volume Up five times and watch the on-screen volume bar.
- The bar moves: your remote is fine — the problem was aim or distance.

Fix 1: Set up your remote to control the TV

When it won't work: a simple IR remote has no volume keys to program. If setup finishes but volume still fails, the IR path is probably blocked — that's Fix 2.
Fix 2: Clear the IR path and re-aim the remote
Enhanced and Voice remotes send volume over IR even though everything else runs on Wi-Fi. The IR blaster is the small window on the remote's top edge, and it needs a clear line to the TV.
- Wipe the top edge of the remote with a dry cloth.
- Move soundbars, plants, or decor away from the TV's lower bezel.
- Stand within about 15 feet, with line of sight, and test again.
When it won't work: glass cabinet doors and some ultra-thin bezels block IR. If power also fails from the remote, the issue is IR, not volume alone.
Fix 3: Check where your audio is going
If a soundbar or receiver plays the sound over HDMI-ARC or optical, the TV speakers are off and the remote may be controlling the wrong device. That's often correct — you usually want to control whatever makes the sound.
On a Roku TV, open Settings → Audio and confirm the output device. On a streaming player, re-run Fix 1 and pick your soundbar or receiver brand when asked, or turn on HDMI-CEC (sometimes “1-touch play” or “System audio control”) so volume passes through.
When it won't work: budget soundbars without CEC ignore TV volume commands. Use the soundbar's own remote or app for those.
Fix 4: Turn off Private Listening and unplug headphones
Private Listening routes audio to your phone or to headphones plugged into a Voice Remote Pro, which silences the TV speakers and makes the volume buttons look dead. It's an easy one to miss.
- Close Private Listening in the Roku mobile app (tap the headphone icon to toggle it off).
- Unplug any headphones from the remote's jack.
When it won't work: if you've never turned Private Listening on, skip this step.
Fix 5: Fresh batteries, then re-pair the remote
Weak batteries make Wi-Fi remotes drop commands, volume included, and enhanced remotes can lose their pairing after a firmware update. Rule both out together.
- Install two fresh AAA or AA batteries.

Fix 6: Reset the remote or rule out a stuck button
A frozen remote or a physically stuck volume key can mimic every problem above. This is the last thing to try before you replace it.
- Unplug the Roku for 5 seconds, plug it back in, then remove and reinsert the batteries and hold the pairing button for 5 seconds.
- Press the Volume Up, Volume Down, and Mute keys firmly a few times to free a sticky button.
When it won't work: visible damage or a key that won't spring back means the remote is done. A replacement or the phone route is your fix.
