Roku TV Won't Turn On? Fix No Power or No Picture

Before any fix, learn what kind of "won't turn on" you have. Look at the small status light, usually under the Roku logo at the bottom of the screen.

• No light at all: the TV isn't getting power. Jump to Fix 1 and Fix 3.
• Light is on, screen is black: the TV has power. It's likely the input, remote, or backlight — see Fix 2, Fix 4, and Fix 5.

Now press the physical power button on the TV itself, not the remote. If it turns on, your TV is fine and the remote is the problem. Keep that in mind.

Fix 1: Power-cycle the TV the right way

This clears most no-power and frozen-screen problems. A soft reset with the remote isn't enough — you need to drain the TV fully.

1. Unplug the TV's power cord from the wall outlet.
2. Press and hold the TV's physical power button for 15 seconds to drain residual charge.
3. Wait a full 60 seconds. This lets the internal capacitors discharge.
4. Plug the cord back into the wall and turn the TV on.

When it won't work: if there's still no status light after this, the cord, outlet, or internal power board is the issue. Move to Fix 3.

Fix 2: Check the status light and input source

A "dead" TV is often just on the wrong input. If the light is on but the screen is black, the TV is running.

1. Press the Home button on the remote to force the Roku menu.
2. No remote? Press the physical button on the TV — a single press usually opens Home or cycles inputs.
3. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. A half-plugged cable shows a black "no signal" screen.
4. Try a different HDMI port and label it in Settings > TV inputs.

When it won't work: if the Roku home screen never appears even from the TV's own button, this is a display or power fault, not an input problem.

Fix 3: Test the outlet and ditch the power strip

Roku TVs pull steady power. A weak surge protector or shared power strip can starve the set so it never boots.

1. Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet to confirm the outlet works.
2. Plug the TV directly into the wall, not a power strip or surge protector.
3. Swap the outlet entirely — try one on a different wall or circuit.
4. Check the cord where it meets the TV. On many Hisense and TCL sets it's a removable plug that works loose.

When it won't work: if the TV still won't power on any outlet, plugged straight into the wall, the fault is inside the TV's power board.

Fix 4: Rule out the remote — your TV may be on already

People often blame the TV when the remote is dead. If the physical power button turned the set on, this is your fix.

1. Swap in fresh batteries and press hard, aiming at the TV.
2. For Roku Voice or Enhanced remotes, re-pair: hold the pairing button inside the battery compartment for 5 seconds.
3. Point your phone camera at the remote's front and press a button. IR remotes show a faint light on camera; no light means a dead remote.

When it won't work: a remote can't wake a TV that has no power. If the status light is off, this section won't help — go back to Fix 1.

Fix 5: Run the flashlight test, then force a restart

If the TV has power and sound but the screen stays black, test the backlight before you assume the worst.

1. Turn the TV on and play something you can hear.
2. Shine a bright flashlight at a sharp angle, close to the screen.
3. Look for a very faint picture. If you can see menus in the flashlight beam, the backlight LEDs have failed — that's a hardware repair.
4. No faint image but the TV responds? Force a restart in Settings > System > Power > System restart, or hold the recessed RESET button on the back for 15–20 seconds for a factory reset.

When it won't work: a factory reset needs a visible menu. If you can't see the screen at all, the reset button won't fix a backlight or panel failure — that's a service call to Roku or the TV maker.
