To reset a Firestick without the remote, install Amazon's free Fire TV app on your phone. Use it as a replacement remote over Wi-Fi. If it won't connect to Wi-Fi at all, unplugging it briefly still forces a soft restart. That's not the same as a full factory reset.

Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick 4K, and Fire TV Stick 4K Max are often just called Firestick. They all use the same small remote. The Fire TV Cube uses a similar one. Any of these remotes is easy to lose in couch cushions or break after a drop. The fixes below work across that whole lineup. Older or cheaper models support fewer of the options below.

The 30-Second Test: Which Fix Fits Your Situation?

Answer these three questions before you pick a method.

  • Is the Firestick's light on and plugged in? If not, start with Method 1.
  • Do you have a smartphone on the same Wi-Fi network as the stick? If yes, Method 2 is usually fastest.
  • Is the stick brand new and never connected to Wi-Fi? Skip ahead to Method 4 or 5 instead.

Quick note if you have a Hisense TV. Some newer Hisense TVs run Fire TV Edition built into the television itself. That's different from a plug-in Fire TV Stick. If that's your situation, HiRemote turns your iPhone into a remote for that built-in interface. HiRemote is built and supported specifically for that built-in Fire TV Edition interface on Hisense TVs, not as a general Fire TV Stick remote.

Method 1: Power-Cycle the Stick for a Quick Restart

Unplug the Fire TV Stick's power cable from the wall or USB adapter. Wait a bit, then plug it back in. This forces a restart and often clears a frozen screen or a stuck app.

It won't erase your settings or apps. If your real problem is a full factory reset, this step alone won't get you there. It just restarts what's already on the stick.

This works less well if the stick is frozen on a logo screen or stuck mid-setup. In that case, try Method 2 instead.

Method 2: Use Amazon's Free Fire TV App as a Replacement Remote

Amazon makes a free Fire TV app for iPhone and Android. Install it, then open it on a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your stick.

The app shows a directional pad, a home button, and a keyboard for typing passwords. From there you can reach Settings and run a full factory reset without ever touching a physical remote.

The app needs the stick to already be on your Wi-Fi network. If you're setting up a brand-new stick for the first time, it has no network connection yet. The app can't find a stick that isn't on Wi-Fi. In that case, see Method 4 or 5.

For more on getting this app running, see our guide to the Amazon Fire TV remote app.

Method 3: Pair a Bluetooth Remote or Game Controller You Already Own

The Fire TV Stick accepts other Bluetooth remotes and most game controllers too. It isn't limited to the remote it shipped with. If you own a universal remote with Bluetooth, or a game console controller, you can often pair it directly.

Check your controller or remote's own manual for its pairing steps, since these vary by brand. Once paired, the directional buttons and select button are usually enough to reach the reset menu.

Pairing a brand-new Bluetooth accessory can itself need on-screen confirmation. That creates the same chicken-and-egg problem as a brand-new setup. This method works best when the stick is already set up and just missing its remote.

If pairing issues are the real problem rather than a missing remote, our guide to a Fire Stick remote that won't pair covers that separately.

Not the right device? If you were searching for how to control a Hisense smart TV from your phone, this isn't the right page. HiRemote is a free iPhone app built for VIDAA, Android TV, and Hisense's Roku TV models. See how it compares to Amazon's own app in our Fire TV remote app guide.

Method 4: Try Your TV's Remote Through HDMI-CEC

Many modern TVs support HDMI-CEC, a feature that lets one remote control multiple connected devices over the HDMI cable. If your TV and the stick both support it, your TV's remote may send navigation commands to the stick.

Look for an HDMI-CEC setting in your TV's picture or connection menu. The exact name and location differ by TV brand and model.

CEC support is inconsistent across TV brands, and some Fire TV Stick generations don't expose full navigation over CEC. Treat this as a bonus option, not your main plan.

Method 5: Check for a Physical Button on Newer Sticks

Some newer streaming stick models include a small physical button for pairing or reset. It sits on the device itself, not the remote. Whether yours has one — and what it does — depends on your exact model and generation.

Check the device itself and any included documentation from the box, since button placement and function vary.

Older or base-model sticks often skip this button entirely. If yours doesn't have one, rely on Methods 1 through 4 instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset a Fire TV Stick without the remote at all?

Yes, in most cases. Amazon's free Fire TV app lets your phone act as a remote once the stick is on your Wi-Fi network, and it can reach the Settings menu to run a factory reset. If the stick has never connected to Wi-Fi, you'll need another option, like a Bluetooth controller or your TV's remote through HDMI-CEC.

How do I factory reset a Firestick using my phone?

Install Amazon's free Fire TV app on your phone and connect to the same Wi-Fi network as the stick. Open the app, use its directional pad to reach Settings, then find the device reset option and confirm. The exact menu path can vary slightly by software version. Look for wording like reset or restore under device or system settings.

Does unplugging a Fire TV Stick reset it?

No — unplugging only restarts the stick, it doesn't erase any settings or apps. A full factory reset needs you to reach the on-screen Settings menu. You can get there with the original remote, Amazon's Fire TV phone app, or another compatible remote. Think of unplugging as a quick fix for freezes, not a true reset.

Can I use my TV remote to control a Fire Stick?

Sometimes, through a feature called HDMI-CEC that lets compatible TVs and connected devices share one remote. It depends on both your TV and the stick supporting CEC, and support varies by brand. Check your TV's connection or picture settings for an HDMI-CEC toggle to try it.

What if my Fire TV Stick isn't on Wi-Fi and I lost the remote?

Try a Bluetooth game controller or universal remote first. Some can pair directly with the stick's on-screen setup prompts. If that doesn't work, HDMI-CEC through your TV's remote is the next option, though support varies by brand. As a last resort, borrowing a friend's or neighbor's Fire TV remote temporarily can finish the setup.

Is there a Fire TV Stick reset button on the device itself?

It depends on the model and generation. Some newer Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube versions include a small physical button. Older or base models don't. Check the device casing and any included documentation, since placement and function differ by generation. If you don't see one, rely on the Fire TV app or HDMI-CEC instead.
