No sound during screen mirroring almost always means the audio is playing somewhere other than the TV. Check three things first: your TV isn't muted, your phone isn't still connected to Bluetooth headphones or a speaker, and the TV's audio output is set to its own speakers. One of those three fixes it most of the time.

I mirror my iPhone to a Hisense U7K in the living room most nights, plus an older Roku-based R6 in the bedroom. Last week I got a crisp picture and total silence. My phone was still paired to a HomePod mini in the kitchen, so every bit of audio went there. Ten seconds in Control Center fixed it. If you're not even sure mirroring is meant to carry audio, it is — so silence usually points to a routing problem, not a missing feature.

The 30-second test

Before you dig into any menus, run this quick check. It rules out the two most common causes in about half a minute.

  • Open your iPhone's Control Center (or the volume panel on Android). Is audio routed to AirPods or a Bluetooth speaker? Tap it back to your phone or the TV.
  • Grab the remote and press Mute once, then Volume Up a few steps. A muted TV shows a picture but stays silent.
  • Still nothing? Stop the mirroring session and start it again. A dropped audio handshake is common.

No remote handy for that mute-and-volume check? HiRemote, the free Remote for Hisense Smart TV app, puts volume, mute, and the full D-pad on your iPhone — so you can jump straight into the TV's sound menu while you troubleshoot. It pairs over Wi-Fi in about 30 seconds and needs no account.

Fix 1: Unmute the TV and turn up the volume

Mirroring sends the sound to your TV, not your phone. So the TV's own volume controls playback. If the TV is muted or sitting at zero, you get video with no audio.

Grab the physical remote or your phone remote and do this:

  • Press Mute once to toggle it off. Watch the mute icon disappear on screen.
  • Press Volume Up five or six steps.
  • Confirm you didn't leave the TV set to a headphone or Bluetooth output (that's Fix 3).

When this won't work: if the volume bar moves on screen but you still hear nothing, the audio isn't reaching the speakers at all. Skip to Fix 3.

Fix 2: Disconnect Bluetooth audio on your phone

This is the sneakiest cause. If your phone is paired to AirPods, a car stereo, a smart speaker, or a soundbar, it keeps sending audio there — even while the screen mirrors to the TV.

On iPhone:

  • Open Control Center.
  • Press and hold the audio card in the top-right corner.
  • Tap the output icon and choose your iPhone or the TV instead of the Bluetooth device.

On Android:

  • Open Settings → Connected devices.
  • Disconnect any active Bluetooth speaker or headphones.
  • Restart the cast. Google's Chromecast help covers device-specific quirks.

When this won't work: if no Bluetooth device is connected and it's still silent, the problem is on the TV side.

Fix 3: Set the TV audio output to its own speakers

If you use a soundbar, an AV receiver, or Bluetooth speakers, the TV may be routing audio to a device that's off or on the wrong input. The mirrored video shows up fine, but the sound has nowhere to go.

On a Hisense VIDAA TV, go to Home → Settings → Sound → Speakers (or Audio Output) and pick TV Speaker. On Roku TVs it's Settings → Audio → Speakers → TV speakers. On Google TV it's Settings → Display & Sound → Audio output.

If you do want the soundbar, make sure it's powered on and set to the right HDMI-ARC or optical input. A soundbar that lost its sync is a common culprit — our Hisense soundbar sync guide walks through it.

When this won't work: if TV Speaker is already selected and it's still silent, move to Fix 4.

Digging through the sound menu is faster from your phone than clicking a directional pad. HiRemote opens Settings and steps through the audio-output options with a tap. On a Hisense Roku TV, you can even use the free browser remote — no app to install.

Fix 4: Restart the mirroring session and both devices

Mirroring sets up an audio handshake when it connects. If that handshake drops, you get video but no sound until you reconnect.

  • Stop mirroring on your phone. On iPhone, open Control Center → Screen Mirroring → Stop Mirroring.
  • Wait five seconds, then start it again and pick your TV. Apple explains the full flow on its AirPlay page.
  • Still nothing? Restart the TV — unplug it for 30 seconds — and reboot your phone.

When this won't work: if a fresh session still has no audio in every app, one specific app is probably blocking it. See Fix 5.

Fix 5: Open protected content in the TV's own app

Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and some other apps block mirrored audio (and often video) because of copy protection. You'll usually see a black screen or silent playback the moment a title starts.

There's no workaround for the DRM itself — it's built in. Instead:

  • Open the same app directly on your Hisense TV using its remote or the app-launch shortcuts.
  • Sign in once, then play the title on the TV. Audio and video run natively, no mirroring needed.
  • Keep mirroring for photos, browser tabs, presentations, and non-DRM apps, where it works fine.

When this won't work: playing in the native app sidesteps the DRM block entirely, so this one always fixes protected content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no sound when I mirror my phone to my TV?

The audio is playing somewhere other than the TV. Most often the TV is muted, your phone is still connected to Bluetooth headphones or a speaker, or the TV's audio output points to a soundbar that's off. Check those three in that order and the sound usually comes back.

Does screen mirroring carry sound?

Yes, screen mirroring carries sound. AirPlay from an iPhone and Miracast from Android both send audio and video to the TV together. If you get a picture with no sound, something is interrupting the audio route — it isn't a limit of mirroring itself.

Why does Netflix have no sound when I mirror it?

Netflix blocks mirrored audio and video with copy protection (DRM). You'll usually see a black screen or silent playback. There's no fix for the block itself. Open Netflix directly in your TV's own app instead — the sound and picture play natively with no mirroring.

Why is my mirrored audio playing through Bluetooth instead of the TV?

Your phone is still paired to a Bluetooth device, so it keeps routing sound there. On iPhone, open Control Center, hold the audio card, and switch output to your phone or the TV. On Android, disconnect the Bluetooth device in Settings, then restart the cast.

How do I get sound when mirroring my iPhone to a TV?

Make sure the TV isn't muted and its volume is up, since mirroring routes audio to the TV. Then confirm your iPhone isn't sending sound to AirPods or a speaker. If a soundbar is connected, set the TV output to it and switch it on. Restart the mirror if the sound still won't play.
